Triangulum Galaxy: The Light Reaching Your Eyes Tonight Left Before Humans Existed — and You Can See It Without a Telescope
The light entering your eye right now, from a faint smudge in the constellation Triangulum, has been travelling for 2.73 million years. When it left its source, the creatures that would eventually become us were still 2.4 million years from existing.
Tonight, under a dark enough sky, you can see that galaxy with nothing but your own two eyes.
This is Messier 33 — the Triangulum Galaxy. NASA just featured it as today's Astronomy Picture of the Day. And it is one of the most overlooked objects in the night sky.
What is the Triangulum Galaxy?
The Triangulum Galaxy is the third largest member of the Local Group — the cluster of about 54 galaxies our Milky Way calls home. It contains roughly 40 billion stars, spans about 60,000 light-years across, and sits oriented face-on toward us like a pinwheel in the sky.
Unlike the Milky Way and Andromeda, which both have large central bulges, Triangulum is a pure, uncluttered spiral. Thinner. More elegant. And right now it is forming new stars at a higher rate than either of its larger neighbours. Its arms blaze with hot blue-white stellar nurseries.
How far away is the Triangulum Galaxy?
2.73 million light-years. That number needs a comparison to actually land.
Light travels at 300,000 kilometres per second — fast enough to circle the entire Earth seven times in one second. To travel from the Triangulum Galaxy to your eyes, even at that speed, takes 2.73 million years. When that light began its journey, Australopithecus was just emerging in Africa. Stone tools hadn't been invented. Our species — Homo sapiens — wouldn't appear for another 2.4 million years.
What is NGC 604, and why is it extraordinary?
Inside Triangulum lies a structure called NGC 604. It is a giant stellar nursery — and one of the most extreme star-forming environments in the entire Local Group of galaxies.
NGC 604 spans approximately 1,500 light-years. The Orion Nebula — the iconic star-factory you can see on a clear winter night — is about 24 light-years across. NGC 604 is sixty times wider. It harbours over 200 of the hottest, most massive stars known, each tens to hundreds of times more massive than our Sun, blasting ultraviolet radiation outward into a nebula that dwarfs anything in our own galaxy.
If NGC 604 were placed at the distance of the Orion Nebula — just 1,344 light-years away — it would span over 60 degrees of sky. That is six fists held at arm's length in either direction. More than 120 full Moons placed side by side across the heavens. It would be the dominant feature of the night sky from every city on Earth. It would cast faint shadows on the ground at midnight.
Can you actually see the Triangulum Galaxy without a telescope?
Yes — but you have to earn it.
Triangulum's visual magnitude is about 5.7. The human eye starts struggling below 6.0 even under ideal conditions. The problem isn't brightness alone — the galaxy spans a patch of sky roughly twice the size of the full Moon, so its total light is spread very thin. Surface brightness is low, even though the total light adds up.
From a suburban garden: invisible. From a dark rural field with no Moon, eyes fully adapted for 20 minutes: you might catch it as an almost imperceptible oval smudge just south of the Andromeda Galaxy in the constellation Triangulum. Binoculars reveal it clearly. A small telescope turns it spectacular.

What happens to Triangulum when the Milky Way and Andromeda collide?
In about 4 to 5 billion years, the Milky Way and Andromeda are on course for a full merger. Most people have heard that story. What almost no one knows is what it means for Triangulum.
Triangulum is gravitationally associated with Andromeda — possibly a satellite, possibly a long-orbit companion. When Andromeda plows into the Milky Way, Triangulum gets pulled into the chaos. Some models suggest it gets flung into intergalactic space. Others suggest it is gradually absorbed into the new merged supergalaxy.
Either way: the peaceful, face-on spiral making new stars that you can see tonight does not survive the encounter in any recognisable form. The physics of galaxy mergers is violent even when it looks slow.
That is still more time than the Earth has existed. But it is coming. And Triangulum is already on the clock.
Why do astronomers study Triangulum so closely?
Because we live inside the Milky Way, which makes studying our own galaxy maddening. You cannot draw a map of a forest while standing in the middle of it. And Andromeda, our nearest large neighbour, is tilted at an angle that obscures part of its structure.
Triangulum faces us almost perfectly. Every spiral arm is exposed. Every star-forming region is visible. No tilting, no foreshortening, no obscuring dust lanes blocking the view. Astronomers call this a face-on spiral, and it makes Triangulum one of the most scientifically useful galaxies accessible to us — a reference object for testing theories about how spirals form, age, and evolve.
Why did NASA choose Triangulum for its Astronomy Picture of the Day?
APOD — the Astronomy Picture of the Day — has run without interruption since June 16, 1995. More than 30 years of daily space images, selected by NASA astronomers from astrophotographers and observatories worldwide.
For September 18, 2026, the editors chose Messier 33. The image reveals Triangulum's full spiral architecture in extraordinary detail — glowing pink hydrogen clouds marking star-forming regions, the brilliant NGC 604 blazing in the northern arm, and the faint blue haze of billions of stars spreading outward from a modest, quiet core.
