GoFast UFO Video: The Navy Footage That Looks Like a Missile Skimming the Ocean — and the Physics That Might Change Your Mind
A United States Navy pilot is tracking something off the Atlantic coast. It's 2015. The aircraft is an F/A-18 Super Hornet from the USS Theodore Roosevelt's air wing. The infrared targeting pod locks onto something below.
Then a voice crackles over the intercom.
"Oh my gosh dude… Wow, what is that man? Look at it fly!"
That 34-second clip — known as the GoFast UFO video — became one of three pieces of footage officially released by the US Department of Defense in April 2020. It's the one that looks the most physically impossible. An object appears to race across the surface of the Atlantic Ocean, practically kissing the waves, moving with the confidence of something that has no business being there.
And it's also the one where the official explanation is the most fascinating — and the most bitterly contested.
What does the GoFast UFO video actually show?
The GoFast video was captured by a Navy ATFLIR targeting pod — the same advanced infrared sensor system that filmed the Gimbal footage. The object appears as a small, bright shape moving fast at extremely low altitude over open ocean. White-hot against a dark sea. No exhaust trail. No rotor wash. No wings visible. The object doesn't arc. Doesn't decelerate. Just goes.
To a first-time viewer, it looks like a sea-skimming cruise missile — or something operating with technology that shouldn't exist. The pilots' shock is unambiguous. These are military aviators who spend careers tracking fast-moving objects. And they sound genuinely surprised.
Is GoFast actually going fast?
Here's where the story gets genuinely interesting. According to AARO — the Pentagon's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office — the object probably isn't going fast at all.
The official explanation is parallax. The ATFLIR pod is mounted on a jet moving at several hundred miles per hour. The camera is panning rapidly to track the object. That panning motion, combined with the sensor's narrow field of view, creates a powerful optical illusion: a slow-moving object at high altitude appears to streak across the ocean surface far below.
Independent analyst Mick West ran the numbers publicly — using the video's own cockpit display data showing the jet's altitude, airspeed, and camera depression angle. His conclusion: the object was likely at roughly 13,000 feet altitude, drifting at approximately 30 to 40 mph. Not a missile. Not an unknown craft. Possibly a high-altitude weather balloon or small drone.
Why doesn't everyone accept the balloon explanation?
To be fair to the sceptics — and there are credible ones — the parallax argument isn't universally accepted, even among people who take a scientific approach.
Some analysts point to the ATFLIR pod's autofocus system, which should theoretically adjust for the object's true distance, implying the sensor itself believed the object was closer to the surface than the parallax calculation suggests. Others note the object is remarkably stable — no tumbling, no deformation, no behaviour you'd expect from a mylar balloon buffeted by Atlantic winds at altitude. And the pilots themselves registered genuine surprise — not the casual observation of someone spotting a weather balloon.
AARO has not issued a final public determination closing the GoFast case with the same confidence that other cases have been resolved. Their broader annual UAP report to Congress categorised a significant portion of cases as "unresolved pending further data." The sensor logs that would definitively settle the altitude question have not been publicly released.
How does GoFast compare to Gimbal and Tic Tac?
The three videos were released together by the DoD, but they're genuinely different cases — different sensors, different conditions, different pilot accounts, different anomalies.
The Tic Tac (2004, USS Nimitz) — the Commander David Fravor encounter — involved corroborating radar tracks, multiple independent witnesses across multiple aircraft, and an object that reportedly moved from 80,000 feet to sea level in seconds. The scale of the witness testimony makes it harder to dismiss as a single sensor artefact.
The Gimbal (also 2015, also USS Theodore Roosevelt deployment) shows an object that appears to rotate against the prevailing wind direction. AARO's explanation — a rotation in the camera gimbal housing, not the object itself — is compelling. It's also fiercely disputed by people who've studied the sensor mechanics.
GoFast is arguably the most technically explicable of the three. The parallax case is well-constructed and has survived public scrutiny. But "most explicable" isn't the same as "explained" — and the distinction matters.

What do the PURSUE files tell us about maritime UAP cases?
GoFast predates the PURSUE programme, but it fits a pattern that appears throughout the declassified records. The PURSUE archive includes multiple maritime infrared cases that share the GoFast signature — low-altitude ocean environment, infrared sensor platform, object identity unresolved.

Navy infrared footage. Maritime environment. Duration and object characteristics classified. Released August 7, 2026 in the 41-file batch that also included Gulf of Oman 2021 Navy footage.
What's notable: across all five PURSUE releases, maritime cases consistently show the same unresolved pattern — stable objects, no propulsion signature, no exhaust plume, behaviour that sensor operators flag as anomalous. Whether that's evidence of something genuinely unexplained, or evidence that ocean environments produce unusually deceptive atmospheric and optical conditions, remains an open question. Both hypotheses have supporters with PhDs.
Should you believe the balloon explanation for GoFast?
The honest answer: the parallax argument is plausible, well-constructed, and supported by multiple independent analysts who've done the actual maths. Mick West's work has been publicly scrutinised and hasn't collapsed. The physics checks out under the assumed conditions.
But the assumed conditions are precisely what's disputed. If the altitude estimate is even moderately wrong — if the ATFLIR really was focusing near the surface — then the parallax framework becomes much weaker. And the raw sensor data that would resolve that question definitively is still classified.
That's the uncomfortable position GoFast puts you in. It might be a balloon. The evidence that it's a balloon is reasonable. But the evidence that would make it certain isn't public. Which is either a bureaucratic inconvenience or a meaningful detail, depending on where you sit.
Where is the GoFast investigation now?
AARO is still working through its backlog. The vast majority of UAP cases reviewed — well over 90% — have been attributed to known objects: drones, balloons, sensor artefacts, atmospheric phenomena. A small number remain genuinely unresolved after full analysis. The office continues to publish annual reports to Congress.
GoFast sits in a grey zone: plausibly explained, not definitively closed. Which is either reassuring or frustrating depending on your priors — and completely normal for a case where the full sensor data is still restricted.
