Gimbal UFO Video: The Rotating Object Navy Pilots Filmed — and What AARO's Explanation Still Doesn't Fully Settle
A US Navy pilot locked his radar on something unusual off the East Coast. It appeared on the infrared camera — dark, aura-wrapped, moving smoothly at altitude. Then it rotated. Slowly. Deliberately. And drifted into a cloud bank.
That was January 21, 2015. The 34-second clip became one of the most studied UAP videos in history. The Pentagon officially confirmed it was real in April 2020. And as of today, the government's own UAP office has offered an explanation — but a significant number of people who've examined the full sensor picture say the case isn't closed.
What is the Gimbal UFO video?
The Gimbal video is an ATFLIR infrared recording made by a US Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet pilot over the Atlantic Ocean, roughly 100 miles off the Eastern Seaboard. The footage shows a dark, oblong object — surrounded by a faint infrared aura — gliding smoothly with no visible exhaust plume, no wings, no rotor wash. At one point it appears to rotate in place. Audio captured on the recording: "Look at that thing — it's rotating!"
The video wasn't publicly known until December 2017, when To The Stars Academy of Arts and Science released three Navy sensor videos to The New York Times. Gimbal was one of them. Pentagon authenticated all three in April 2020. Gimbal became the one with an official technical explanation — and the one where that explanation keeps getting challenged.
What does the Gimbal video actually show?
Watch the raw footage. The object moves smoothly — against the known wind direction at that altitude. No transponder signal. No radio contact. Nothing matching a known commercial or military aircraft on the infrared profile. One pilot says "There's a whole fleet of them, look on the SA" — referring to the situational awareness display, implying multiple contacts. Another replies: "Look at that thing, it's rotating."
That's what made it extraordinary to the pilots in the cockpit. In combat aviation, you recognise what jet engines look like on infrared. What balloons look like. What drones look like. Experienced Naval Aviators with hundreds of carrier-flight hours were surprised. That surprise is on the tape.
Has the Gimbal UFO been explained?
In 2023, AARO — the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, the Pentagon's official UAP investigation body — published its Historical Record Report. Their conclusion: the Gimbal object is most likely a distant aircraft, and the apparent rotation is an optical artifact called gimbal de-rotation.
Here's how it works: the ATFLIR camera uses a mechanically rotating gimbal mount to keep targets in frame. When a tracked object moves toward the edge of the camera's field of view, the gimbal rotates to compensate. On the video, that camera rotation can make the target appear to rotate when in reality the camera sensor is rotating. The infrared aura? Consistent with jet engine heat bloom. The shape? Optical glare artifact from a distant aircraft exhaust plume viewed edge-on.
Why does the controversy persist?
Because AARO's explanation covers the rotation. It doesn't fully address everything else recorded that day.
- Wind data: Weather records for January 21, 2015, indicate the object appeared to track into prevailing headwinds — a passive object like a balloon or debris cannot do that.
- No transponder: Commercial aircraft in US airspace at that altitude are required to squawk ADS-B. There was nothing squawking on that contact.
- "A whole fleet of them": The pilot's comment references multiple contacts on sensors, not just the one object in the video. AARO's public report addresses the primary infrared footage — the broader sensor picture from that day has not been fully released.
- Radar correlation: Pilots reported radar contact corroborating the infrared track. A camera artifact wouldn't produce a separate radar return. AARO has not publicly addressed the radar data in detail.
Independent analysts — including some with firsthand ATFLIR experience — argue that while the rotation artifact explanation is plausible, confirming the full conclusion requires the radar tracks, altitude data, and any ELINT recordings from that encounter. Those records have not been released to the public.
Is Gimbal connected to the PURSUE declassified files?
The Gimbal video itself predates the PURSUE archive, but the pattern it represents — military sensor recording, official authentication, followed by a technically partial explanation — is precisely what PURSUE is documenting at scale. Across 375 declassified records in five releases, dozens of cases follow the same signature: Navy or Air Force infrared and radar data, anomalous flight characteristics, no identified source, no fully satisfying conclusion.
PURSUE Release 04 includes cases from the Pacific (1996 STS-80 shuttle imagery) and Atlantic theatres. Release 05 contains Gulf of Oman 2021 and Pacific Ocean 2019 Navy videos that investigators describe as sharing characteristics with the Gimbal encounter — sensor anomalies, unusual motion profiles, no exhaust or propulsion signature. None carry a definitive resolution.

Why does the Gimbal video still matter in 2026?
Because it set a standard. Gimbal was the first military UAP video confirmed authentic by the Pentagon that also received a detailed, publicly argued technical rebuttal. It proved that some UAP videos have mundane explanations rooted in sensor physics — and it also revealed how incomplete a case can look when only part of the sensor record is released.
Every declassified UAP case since — all 375 files in PURSUE, every military infrared clip you'll find at the archive — gets measured against the Gimbal standard. Does the proposed explanation account for all sensors? Are there corroborating tracks? What data wasn't released?
The Gimbal video taught analysts and the public to ask better questions. That's not a small thing for a 34-second clip filmed over empty ocean a decade ago.
Three videos. Three encounters. A government UAP office now years into operation. And the complete sensor dataset from the 2014–2015 East Coast UAP wave — including what was on radar, what ground stations recorded, and how many contacts were being tracked — has never been made public.
