What is the path of the 2027 solar eclipse?
The Moon's umbra — the inner shadow cone where totality is complete — is only about 250 km wide where it touches Earth's surface. But on August 2, 2027, that narrow band cuts across three continents and more than ten countries in a single afternoon.
The shadow enters Europe just after 9 AM local time. Parts of Andalusia — Granada, Málaga, the Rock of Gibraltar — fall into totality first.

In the minutes before the Moon fully covers the Sun, the light goes wrong. It's still daytime — but wrong. Shadows become razor-sharp. Colors drain into something grey and strange. Birds stop singing. Then the last sliver of sunlight vanishes—

Why is the 2027 eclipse totality so unusually long?
Eclipse duration depends on geometry. The Moon needs to be as close to Earth as possible — making its apparent disc larger than the Sun's. And the Sun needs to be as far from Earth as possible — making its disc smaller. In August 2027, both conditions align almost perfectly.
The Moon will be near perigee (its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit). The Sun will be near aphelion (its farthest point from Earth). The result: the Moon's apparent disc will be just slightly larger than the Sun's, covering it completely — with enough margin to hold totality for 382 seconds at its peak.

Six minutes and twenty-two seconds sounds short. For solar physicists, it's an eternity.
Most corona research happens from satellites — but even space instruments are blinded by the Sun's disc at optical wavelengths. During totality, ground telescopes can study the corona's fine structure in ways no spacecraft currently can. Research teams are already coordinating networked observation posts from Spain through Egypt, synchronized with data from solar satellites above. The goal: map coronal magnetic field structures, trace solar wind formation, and catch any coronal mass ejection activity in real time.

Where is the best place to watch the solar eclipse 2027?
The scientific consensus is clear: Luxor, Egypt.
It sits directly beneath the maximum totality point. It offers 6:22 of darkness. And historically, Luxor averages less than 1% cloud cover in August — among the most reliably clear skies on Earth for that month. Morocco and southern Spain are spectacular locations but carry higher cloud-cover risk in August.
Eclipse tourism operators are already reporting waitlists for Egyptian Nile cruises and Luxor hotel blocks dated August 2, 2027. Valley of the Kings tours on that date are selling months in advance.
Is the solar eclipse 2027 visible from the United States?
No totality. The US will see a partial eclipse — the Moon covering a fraction of the Sun — but the full blackout effect only happens inside the path of totality, which stays entirely across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

What was the last comparable total solar eclipse?
The last time Earth saw totality approaching 2027's duration was June 30, 1973 — 7 minutes 4 seconds over the Sahara Desert. A Concorde supersonic jet famously chased the Moon's shadow that day, flying along the eclipse path fast enough to extend onboard observation time to 74 minutes. Scientists used it to study the corona in unprecedented detail for that era.
