Triangle UFO: FBI Field Reports Describe the Same Unidentified Shape Over Two Military Sites — 21 Years Apart
Two formal FBI reports describe triangular UFO sightings over active military sites — one in Afghanistan during the height of Operation Enduring Freedom, one near Colorado Springs in 2023. Same shape. Different continents. Twenty-one years apart. Both documents are now public, released as part of PURSUE Release 05 in August 2026.
This isn't a shaky phone video. The FBI uses FD-302 forms — the same documents used to build federal court cases — to record formal witness statements. When one gets filed about something in the sky, it means the Bureau considered that sighting worth preserving in the federal record. Permanently.
They filed two of them about triangles. Over military installations. Two decades apart.
What is an FD-302 — and why does FBI involvement change things?
An FD-302 is an official FBI interview record. Agents fill them out when a witness makes a statement the Bureau considers significant. These forms are the backbone of federal prosecutions — not casual notes, but sworn documentation preserved in the federal system.
Most UAP cases end up with the military: AARO, the Pentagon, Air Force safety offices. The FBI's involvement is different. It suggests the Bureau was specifically tasked with collecting testimony — possibly from witnesses with clearances, in situations where standard military reporting channels weren't sufficient. Or that the sightings crossed into domestic law enforcement territory in a way the military couldn't handle alone.
Either way: the Bureau filed the forms. The witnesses went on record. For over two decades, those records stayed classified.
What was seen over Afghanistan in 2002?
The year is 2002. US forces are twelve months into Operation Enduring Freedom. The airspace over Afghanistan is among the most monitored on Earth — Predator drones, U-2s, AWACS, signals intelligence around the clock. Every aircraft that enters that airspace is tracked.
Something apparently wasn't.
The PURSUE Release 05 record includes both the FD-302 and an artist's rendering — a reconstruction of what the witness described. The shape is triangular. Specific altitude, speed, and duration details remain redacted. What isn't redacted: the FBI preserved this testimony in the federal system for the next 24 years.
To be fair — and this matters — the 2002 Afghanistan airspace also contained some of the US military's most classified aircraft. The RQ-1 Predator was still relatively new. The Global Hawk had just entered service. Classified reconnaissance platforms with unusual silhouettes sometimes explain historical triangle sightings. AARO has consistently noted that many UAP reports, when fully investigated, turn out to be advanced US programs that observers hadn't been cleared to know about. But if that's the explanation here, it raises its own question: why file a formal federal witness statement about your own classified aircraft?
Why does the Colorado Springs location matter so much?
Colorado Springs isn't just a city. It is, arguably, the most militarily significant airspace in the United States. Peterson Space Force Base. Schriever Space Force Base. Fort Carson. The US Air Force Academy. And since 2008, at Peterson: the headquarters of NORAD and NORTHCOM — the command whose entire job is monitoring every aircraft in North American airspace, around the clock.
In 2023, the FBI filed a second FD-302 about a triangular object. Near that city. Near those installations.
The timing also matters: 2023 was the year Congress passed the UAP Disclosure Act, the year multiple whistleblowers testified before the House Oversight Committee, and the year AARO was publishing its first historical reviews. The bureaucratic machinery around UAP was more active than at any point since the 1950s. And someone was filing federal paperwork about a triangle near NORAD headquarters.
Is this a pattern — and what's the history of triangle UFO sightings?
Nobody is claiming the two FBI cases are the same object. The PURSUE files document each separately, and there's no public evidence linking them beyond the shape. But the triangular form has a long history in UAP reports — long enough to have its own name: the flying triangle.
The most dramatic documented case is Belgium, 1989–1990. Over eighteen months, thousands of witnesses — police officers, military personnel, civilian pilots — described a large, silent triangular object with lights at each corner. The Belgian Air Force scrambled F-16s on at least one occasion and released its own investigation report. Conclusion: inconclusive. They couldn't identify what was simultaneously tracked on radar and seen by multiple credible observers.
The most common official explanation for that wave, and for many subsequent triangle sightings: the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, which began operational testing around the same period, combined with earlier classified programs with unusual aircraft shapes. That explanation covers a lot of cases. It doesn't cleanly explain an FD-302 filed in 2023, when the B-2 has been publicly photographed for thirty years and is one of the most recognizable aircraft silhouettes in aviation.
What does AARO say about these triangle cases?
AARO's public position has been consistent: most UAP cases, when investigated with full access to classified sensor data, resolve to conventional explanations. The agency has specifically noted that the US operates classified programs which can appear anomalous to observers not cleared on them.
However, AARO also stated in its historical review that it found no evidence that any known US government program accounts for all reported UAP characteristics — including trans-medium travel, instantaneous acceleration without observable propulsion, and objects appearing simultaneously on multiple independent sensor types.
The triangle cases from PURSUE Release 05 have not been publicly resolved. No public explanation has been issued for either FD-302. Both remain open.
That's the honest summary. Not aliens. Not definitely a classified aircraft. Two formal federal documents, two artist reconstructions, one consistent shape, no public answer.
The Belgian UFO wave: thousands of witnesses describe a silent triangular craft. Belgian Air Force F-16 intercept attempted. Official investigation: inconclusive.
FBI FD-302 filed during Operation Enduring Freedom. Triangular object. Artist rendering produced. Altitude, speed, duration: redacted. Status: unresolved.
Second FBI FD-302 filed near Peterson SFB and NORAD/NORTHCOM headquarters. Same shape. A second rendering produced for the PURSUE catalog. Status: unresolved.
41 files published. Both FBI triangle reports declassified for the first time, alongside Navy UAP footage and CIA Cold War case files.
Where do these cases fit in the PURSUE catalog?
The catalog now holds 375 records across five releases. The triangle cases sit alongside some of the most-discussed UAP footage in history — the Tic Tac encounter from the USS Nimitz in 2004, the Gimbal and GoFast Navy videos from 2015, a chandelier-shaped object filmed on infrared over Greece for nearly two minutes. Release 05 alone also includes Navy footage from the Gulf of Oman (2021) and the Pacific Ocean (2019).
What distinguishes the FBI triangle reports from most of that catalog: they're paper, not video. Formal sworn testimony, not sensor footage with disputed metadata or calibration arguments. Two witnesses gave formal statements to the Bureau. The Bureau preserved them. That's a different kind of evidence than a gimbal-rotated FLIR image — and in some ways harder to dismiss.

Triangular UAP. FBI FD-302 witness report filed during Operation Enduring Freedom. Artist rendering included in declassified package. Altitude, speed, and duration: still redacted. Status: unresolved.
Triangular UAP near Peterson Space Force Base and NORAD/NORTHCOM headquarters. Second FBI FD-302. Artist rendering produced for PURSUE catalog. Filed the same year as the UAP Disclosure Act. Status: unresolved.
