Two weeks ago, a US general stood before America's defense industry and made a request the Pentagon would never have spoken out loud a decade ago.

General Stephen Whiting, commander of US Space Command, told industry leaders the US military has a clear demand for "offensive capabilities" in space — specifically, the ability to disable the "critical nodes of large satellite constellations."

The General Said the Quiet Part Out Loud
US Space Command was only created in 2019. Its job: fight and win wars in space. But offensive space weapons have been Washington's most sensitive topic for years. You didn't say you were building them, even if everyone knew you were.

Before a single tank crossed the border, Russian hackers hit the Viasat KA-SAT network — the system Ukrainian forces depended on for secure communications. Thousands of terminals went offline in minutes. Wind farms across Germany lost remote access. It took weeks to fully recover.
That was software. Whiting is talking about hardware.
They've Already Done It. Three Times.
Before you think this is theoretical — it isn't. Three countries have already demonstrated they can destroy satellites in orbit. On purpose.
China launched a ballistic missile at its own weather satellite 850 km up. The explosion created over 3,500 pieces of trackable debris — the single largest addition to the orbital junk field in history. Fragments are still up there, circling Earth, threatening every satellite they pass.
India's Mission Shakti destroyed a satellite at 300 km altitude with a direct-ascent missile. Prime Minister Modi announced it live on national television. India became the fourth member of what experts now call the ASAT club.
Russia destroyed Cosmos 1408, a Soviet-era spy satellite, with a ground-launched missile. The resulting debris cloud forced ISS crew — including American astronauts — to shelter in their return capsules for hours. NASA called it "reckless." Russia called it a successful test.
The US has its own history — including intercepting a failing spy satellite in 2008. But what Whiting is describing goes further than a single strike. He's talking about the ability to systematically dismantle an adversary's entire space-based military architecture.
The New Spacecraft Nobody's Naming
The same week Whiting made his statement, a quieter story slipped past most headlines. The Space Force ordered two additional maneuvering spacecraft from a startup called Impulse Space — adding Victus Salo 2 and Victus Salo 3 to an existing contract worth $28 million.

A spacecraft that can quickly approach another satellite can do many things. Inspect it. Photograph it. Jam its signals. Physically interfere with its solar panels or antennae. In wartime, the distinction between a "maneuvering demonstration" and an "offensive act" is whatever the mission order says.
The Part That Keeps Space Lawyers Awake at Night
To be fair: every major space power is doing some version of this. China's Shijian satellites have been observed approaching other satellites for years — orbital proximity operations with no published scientific justification. Russia's Cosmos inspector spacecraft have pulled alongside Western assets and refused to explain themselves. Nobody admits what they're really for.
The difference is Whiting said it in public. Which means either the US is no longer worried about escalation optics, or the threat level from adversaries has reached a point where deterrence requires being explicit.
There's also a darker concern that space policy experts have been raising for years, quietly: kinetic attacks in orbit create debris. Debris doesn't check passports. What the Numbers Actually Look Like Right Now
