There's Nothing Between Sophie Adenot and Earth Except 420 Kilometres of Void. Today Was Her First Time Outside.

The Hatch Opens

420 kilometres above Earth, the temperature outside swings 278 degrees between sunlight and shadow. The pressure is zero. There's no air, no sound, no ground, and no way to stop if something goes wrong.

Today, ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot opened the airlock hatch of the International Space Station and stepped into that.

It was her first spacewalk. She's been training for this moment since 2022.

To put that speed in context: Sophie Adenot and her crewmate, NASA astronaut Anil Menon, crossed the entire width of France in about three minutes. While working. While floating. While maintaining their grip on a structure that cannot slow down — because if it does, it falls.

What a Spacewalk Actually Is

The word is dangerously calm. A walk implies pavement. A destination. Somewhere to put your foot.

An EVA — Extravehicular Activity — means floating outside a pressurised module in a suit that has replaced every function your body relies on. Breathing. Pressure. Heat regulation. Micrometeorite absorption. The suit is the spacecraft. You're wearing the thing keeping you alive.

The suit has 14 layers. The outer shell is Ortho-Fabric — the same material used in body armour. One of the inner layers is pure gold foil, used as a thermal mirror to reflect infrared radiation. A fleck of orbital debris the size of a grain of sand, at station speed, hits with the energy of a rifle bullet. Those 14 layers are what stands between the astronaut and that.

Key takeaway: A spacewalk suit isn't just clothing — it's a self-contained spacecraft rated for up to 8.5 hours of life support. Every seal, every valve, every layer is a system that cannot fail.

The Mission: U.S. Spacewalk 97

Today's EVA had a specific technical objective: replace a Space-to-Ground antenna unit on the station's exterior truss. This is the hardware that carries voice calls, data uplinks, and medical telemetry between the crew and flight controllers on the ground in real time. It is, in the most literal sense, the ISS crew's lifeline to Earth.

Replacing it means unbolting hardware on the outside of a spacecraft moving at 7.7 km/s. While wearing a suit doing everything your body needs to survive. While the temperature is cycling from −157°C to +121°C every 45 minutes as you drift in and out of the Earth's shadow.

Every tool used during an EVA is tethered. Every movement is planned months in advance. Astronauts train with detailed checklists that account for contingencies inside contingencies. And still, every spacewalk is classified as a high-risk operation by every space agency on Earth.

The Physics Nobody Warns You About

Here's what the press releases don't tell you.

The sun rises and sets every 45 minutes in low Earth orbit. In direct sunlight, the surface of your suit reaches temperatures hotter than boiling water. Then you drift into shadow — and within minutes, you're at −157°C. Your suit is managing that 278-degree transition, continuously, for the duration.

And the debris field. There are currently over 27,000 tracked objects in Earth orbit — visible on the SkyLens live tracker right now — but the untracked micrometeorites are the real threat. Too small to catalogue. Too fast to dodge. Present at every altitude. The astronauts know this. They go outside anyway.

Who Sophie Adenot Is

Sophie Adenot is French. She flew military helicopters before becoming an aeronautical test engineer. She applied to ESA's astronaut corps in 2022, one of over 22,500 people who did. Six were selected. That's a 0.027% acceptance rate — harder to get into than any medical school on the planet.

She's part of Europe's first new astronaut class in over a decade. ESA hadn't recruited in 13 years before this cohort. That gap matters: the people chosen in 2022 are the ones who will fly during the Artemis era, potentially to the Moon's vicinity, potentially on missions that don't exist yet.

Today was her first time outside.

The View

Astronauts who have done EVAs say the same thing, consistently: the training doesn't prepare you for the view.

When you exit the airlock, there's no porthole, no screen, no frame. You're looking at the actual planet. Curving away at the edges. Filling your entire field of vision. Cloud systems the size of countries. Storms you can cover with your thumb. The impossibly thin blue line of the atmosphere — so thin it looks like it could be scraped off.

That blue line is doing everything to keep the surface alive. At 420 km, it's doing nothing for you. The EMU suit is doing that. Fourteen layers of carefully engineered material, between the astronaut and the vacuum that defines the rest of the observable universe.

Key takeaway: 99% of Earth's atmospheric mass sits below 32 km. Sophie Adenot worked today at 420 km — 13 times higher than where almost all the atmosphere ends. The sky above her was, functionally, space.

What Today Means

ESA has trained astronauts and contributed hardware to the ISS for decades — the Columbus laboratory module, the robotic arm, the Automated Transfer Vehicle. European astronauts have lived aboard the station, conducted experiments, commanded the ISS. But spacewalks have historically been dominated by American and Russian crews.

Spacewalk 97 adds another name to the list. Sophie Adenot, alongside Anil Menon — NASA's first South Asian astronaut — completed a hardware replacement on the outside of the most expensive and complex machine humanity has ever assembled.

The next generation of space exploration doesn't look like the last one. Today was evidence.
