Commander Pete Conrad radioed Houston: "I don't know what happened here. We had everything in the world drop out." The Saturn V's analog inertial guidance kept the rocket flying — that system was hardened and unaffected. But the Command Module's electronics were scrambled. The crew had no useful instruments.

In Mission Control, a 24-year-old flight controller named John Aaron remembered something almost nobody else alive had ever seen. A nearly identical electrical signature had appeared months earlier during an obscure ground test. He keyed his mic: "Try SCE to AUX."

Pete Conrad had no idea what that meant. Flight director Gerry Griffin didn't know. Almost nobody did. Only Alan Bean — the most junior crew member, sitting in the lunar module pilot seat — remembered where the switch was. He flipped it. The instruments came back online. The mission continued. Five days later, Apollo 12 landed in the Ocean of Storms.

The "SCE to AUX" moment: Signal Conditioning Electronics to Auxiliary power. It rerouted the Command Module's electronics through a backup bus, restoring all displays. John Aaron's recall of that obscure switch is celebrated in NASA history as one of the finest examples of quick thinking under pressure — and it saved a lunar landing mission that had just been struck by lightning twice.

Why a rocket can survive this — and why they still try to avoid it

A rocket is a metal tube full of highly energetic propellant moving at hundreds of meters per second through a charged atmosphere. That sounds catastrophic. But there's a reason it can survive.

The outer skin of a rocket acts as a partial Faraday cage. When lightning strikes, the electrical current travels along the exterior, not through the avionics inside. Engineers design vehicles with dedicated lightning protection paths — conductive strips and bonding routes that let current flow harmlessly around the payload and navigation systems.

The real danger isn't physical damage. It's what a sudden voltage spike does to electronics: flipped circuit breakers, confused inertial sensors, scrambled telemetry. Exactly what Apollo 12 experienced for those terrifying seconds before Alan Bean found the switch.

Why launch sites still enforce storm rules: Most facilities prohibit launches within 10 nautical miles of lightning activity. The Long March 3B and Apollo 12 both survived — but surviving a lightning strike in flight isn't proof the risk is manageable. It means both missions were lucky about where exactly the bolt hit. A strike at the wrong location, or at the wrong moment in the ascent, has different consequences entirely.

To be fair: we don't have the full engineering readout from Thursday's Long March 3B flight yet. China confirmed mission success, but whether the lightning tripped any systems, required any onboard recovery, or was purely superficial — that detail hasn't been disclosed. What's confirmed is the headline. What the rocket actually went through inside those first minutes remains to be reported.

While the Long March 3B story was breaking, a second Chinese rocket was also in the air. Kinetica-1 — a commercial liquid-fueled vehicle, separate from the state-owned Long March program — launched successfully Thursday and placed five satellites into orbit.

What this moment actually tells us

A rocket surviving a lightning strike is extraordinary. But it also reveals something we rarely talk about: how much of spaceflight is engineering against a hostile universe that never agreed to cooperate.

Every launch passes through the moment engineers call Max-Q — when the vehicle is simultaneously moving fastest and still inside the densest atmosphere, subject to forces that want to tear it apart. Add wind shear, acoustic shock from the engines, thermal gradients. And now, apparently, lightning.

Bottom line: Thursday's Long March 3B lightning strike is the most dramatic confirmed repeat of an Apollo 12-class event in 57 years of spaceflight. Both missions survived. Neither was trivial. The Long March crew — or automated systems — presumably had their own "SCE to AUX" moment. We just don't know yet what it was.
