SpaceX needed four attempts. Rocket Lab needed two. Virgin Orbit never made it at all — they went bankrupt trying.

Who Built This Rocket?

Not a government. Not a defense contractor. Two former engineers from ISRO — India's national space agency — who quit their jobs and started a company.

Pawan Kumar Chandana and Bharath Daka founded Skyroot Aerospace in Hyderabad in 2018. Eight years later, their rocket is in orbit.

The name Vikram isn't accidental. It honors Dr. Vikram Sarabhai — the physicist who built India's entire space program from scratch in the 1960s, when the country was still recovering from partition and had almost nothing. He had rockets transported on bicycles and launched from a fishing village. He died in 1971, before India had ever reached orbit under its own power.

His name now rides on a private spacecraft that just proved his country's engineers can compete with anyone on Earth.

India's Quiet Space Revolution

Most people's mental image of India in space is Chandrayaan-3 — the mission that landed on the Moon's south pole in August 2023 and made India the fourth country to land on the Moon. On a budget smaller than many Hollywood blockbusters. On the first attempt.

But Chandrayaan-3 was ISRO. Government. Decades of institutional knowledge and national funding.

To be fair: One successful orbital flight is a beginning, not a finished product. SpaceX's Falcon 1 reached orbit and was then abandoned — it was never commercially competitive. The Falcon 9 is what built the business. Skyroot's real test is whether Vikram-1 can fly repeatedly, reliably, and profitably. That question is still open.

What This Means for the Launch Market

Right now, small satellite launches are dominated by a handful of players. SpaceX rideshare. Rocket Lab's Electron. India's own ISRO PSLV, which has launched over 50 international satellites in the last decade. Every one of them has more customers than they can comfortably handle.

Adding Skyroot to that list matters for a few reasons. India has one of the world's largest aerospace engineering workforces. Labor costs are substantially lower than the US or New Zealand. And the geography is favorable — launches from India can reach sun-synchronous orbits efficiently, which is exactly what the booming Earth-observation satellite market needs.
